Superficial fungus infection of the skin requires a prolonged treatment period because of a high recurrence rate and is always a puzzle problem of the dermatologists. It was presented at a seminar of the treatment of fungus infection of the skin held recently that 1 % terbinafine cream was not only effective for inhibition of femoral fungus infection, but also had a satisfactory compliance of the patients giving an excellent treatment result within only one week of medication.
Brdimulja of UK conducted a multi-center, prospective, randomized double blind parallel control study in 120 cases of fungus infection of the body and femoral regions, topically using terbinafine cream and placebo once daily for one week and followed-up for 7 weeks. The results demonstrated that in the terbinafine group the cure rate approached and maintained in 84.2 % vs. 23.3 % in the placebo group (P<0.001). The rate of complete cure was 70.2 % in the terbinafine group and 10.0 % in the placebo group (P<0.001). With respect to adverse reaction, reduction of overall clinical symptoms and the usefulness as a whole, terbinafine was remarkably superior to the placebo. The satisfactory compliance of the patients and the fungucide activity of terbinafine resulted in a notable effect during the short period of treatment as well as a satisfactory outcome in the evaluation of its effect 7 weeks later. The cases treated with terbinafine had no recurrence of fungus infection.
